WINS, 1 RACE RECORD
The season started
with the Barrie Beehag Classic in Echuca in October.
Our regular observer, Phil Hickey was unavailable, so thanks to John
Baumgertel (Mildura & District Ski Club President) who helped
us out, with Phil Kelly back in the drivers seat. Due to a small intellectual
error, we failed to complete the race (and that’s all we have
to say about that!)
Our Southern 80
results were almost perfect, with a win and race record in the 6 litre
short course race, followed by our 3rd consecutive win in Veterans,
beating Body Count by 0.34 seconds. The main race on Sunday didn’t
go according to plan, with a missed start and broken cav plate bolts
resulting in a fifth place.
At Robinvale,
we again placed 2nd behind Hazy in Veterans and scored our first ever
win (in Robinvale) in 6 litre with a time of 33 mins 37 secs
(1st leg: 16:49; 2nd leg: 16:48), placing us 15th outright.
We ended the season
with 2 third placings at Mildura, with the boat pulling up well with
no major injuries!
Overall results
for 2008: 3 wins, one record, one 2nd, two 3rds, one 5th, one DNF
(and 3 red faces!).
An interesting
statistic in the Kamikaze v Kryptonite “rivalry”:
Kamikaze = 2 wins, Kryptonite = 2 wins!

| After
the 2006 season Jonsey (Graeme Jones), driver and part boat
owner announced his retirement
after 25 years behind the wheel.
Phil (Ned) Kelly
put his hand up to drive the boat. Phil previously raced his
own boat Harrazza back in the early 90's.
We entered the inaugural Barrie Beehag Classic in November but
failed to finish due to a "rattle" in the gear box.
At the Southern 80, we came 3rd in the Short Course 6 litre
event for the 3rd year in a row.
We won Veterans for the 2nd year in a row coming in 3 seconds
ahead of 3 supercharged unlimited boats, in 2nd, 3rd & 4th.
Our time was 2 seconds quicker than last year.
In the 6 litre Expert class we were heading for our 10th consecutive
placing at the Southern 80, but unfortunately we broke the gear
drive
and failed to complete the course. (Our first DNF for 5 years
at the Southern 80).
At Robinvale we were beaten in Veterans by a Superclass boat
Hazy (previously Moonshot). Our time was one second slower than
the previous year.
In 6 litre we completed the first leg in 16:41 (40 seconds quicker
than our previous best time) but a missed start and major water
leak (broken skeg bolt)
pushed us back to a 6th place on the return leg.
Chris Doonan drove the boat at both Robinvale and Mildura as
Ned was unavailable.
Mildura was our best result for the season with a win in Veterans,
the time of 5:41 was 4 seconds quicker than our previous best
in 2005.
(This makes 4 wins in the past 6 veterans races). Our Veterans
record now stands at 19 starts, 5 wins, 8 - 2nds, 3 - 3rds,
2- 4ths, 1- 5th, No DNFs.
Two of our goals were achieved in 6 litre, breaking a leg time
of 20 mins and breaking the overall time of 40 mins, 19:30 &
19:57 = 39:27,
giving us 3rd place and 12th place outright.

WINS IN VETERANS
The season
highlight was the consecutive wins in Veterans at the Southern 80
and Robinvale 80, including breaking the record, which was held by
Agrovation since 1999.
The goal
of beating turbo charged and supercharged boats with a 6 litre boat
was achieved, but aiming for a 3rd consecutive win at Mildura,
Rodney let the team down by missing his start for the first time in
a river race in 25 years. (He is now seeking counselling!).
The team
again completed all races with no DNFs. Despite the Mildura 100 failure,
the five races at the Southern 80 and Robinvale 80 were their quickest
ever results.
Not bad for 2 “maturing” skiers.

A win finally at the Southern 80

The boys from Kamikaze have "lost their marbles".
After the Mildura DNF they decided to add some horsepower to
the engine. Rod aged 43 & Col 46 should be looking at taking
it easier but after 23 years of racing they still want to go
faster.
The engine now produces 690 hp. The engine
man was disappointed not being able to achieve 2 hp per cubic
inch. The engine measures 352 cubic inches.
The boat was ready to go
5 days before the Southern 80, to achieve the following results:
6 Litre Short Course - 3rd
Veterans - 2nd

Litre - 1st
Yes, after 24 years of trying, this is their 1st win at the
Southern 80.
Rodney now has a tattoo recording the victory.
The boat recorded a GPS speed of 102 mph
(no skiers) and 94.8 mph max speed towing the 2 over 100 kg
skiers during the Southern 80 - 6 litre short course.
At
Robinvale, for the first time in 9 veteran races they failed
to place, coming 4th, but was only 10 seconds off first place.
At
Mildura the aim was to complete the veterans course under 6
minutes. Their time of 5:45 was better than expected averaging
91 mph and maximum speed of 93.8 mph. The time was only 11 seconds
slower than Agrovation's record.
They
followed up with their 2nd win in 3 years the following day
in the 6 litre inboard, with a time of 41:35 seconds - "Still
Improving"
The Cigarette/Kamikaze team have now had 5 wins in 23 years
at the Mildura 100.
